Reti Opening Powerbook 2025
The Reti Opening Powerbook was created from an average of at least 2,300 games. This means that 137,000 games from Mega Database and correspondence chess have passed the Powerbook's entry threshold, plus 295,000 games from the playchess.com engine room.
The original move order, in the manner of Richard Reti, is 1.♘f3 d5 2.c4, followed by a fianchetto with g3 or b3 (or even a double fianchetto). However, nowadays, the term Reti Opening is much broader and encompasses almost all variations after 1.♘f3 that do not directly fall into the well-known major openings. 2.g3 (sometimes also 2.b3) is often played more flexibly, usually followed by 3.♗g2 and 4.0-0. Depending on Black's development, the next move is then decided.
The Reti Powerbook includes as many variations as possible after 1.♘f3, but excludes those involving an early d2-d4, which would lead to, for example, a Catalan or an Indienne.
The most popular moves are:
1...d5 2.g3 ♘f6 3.♗g2 c6 4.0-0, and now Black must choose between 4...♗g4 and 4...♗f5, played almost as often as each other. The latter seems like a good choice to preserve the bishop, but the Powerbook reveals a path to a White advantage:
5.c4 e6 6.♕b3 ♕b6 7.d3.
