Fritz and Chesster  don't teach chess in the traditional way. They don't set up a chessboard or explain how each piece moves. Instead, they're aimed at children who have never played chess before and teach them the basic rules in a Sesame Street-esque setting. Children can follow along with animated cartoons and stories, as well as interactive exercises to solve.

Each piece and rule is explained in a sub-game, which you can play against the computer. Many of these are far removed from the actual chess game, but they allow children to fully understand the sometimes complex rules of the game.

Take the first sequence, for example. Young Prince Fritz must temporarily replace his father, the White King. Accompanied by his cousin Bianca, Fritz sets out on a journey through their kingdom.

During their journey, they are joined by Kalaidoscope, a cheerful instructor, who tells them all about the kingdom. In each scene, children can click on different elements, like the mousetraps in the image above, and fun things happen. This encourages young users to explore the setting. During their journey through the kingdom, the three men encounter the fearsome Black King, who challenges them to a game of chess. But Fritz doesn't know how to play. Fortunately, he learns the game during the rest of his journey. The first lesson comes when they see two sumo wrestlers facing off in a ring. Too large to approach directly, they always stay at least one square apart. They move around the board, blocking each other.

If they do this correctly, Fritz and Bianca can push their opponent off the board. They then attempt to occupy the seats before their opponent, and in doing so, the program shows them how to use "opposition" to outsmart them. By the end of this lesson, children will have learned everything there is to know about the king's move, including the concept of opposition.
